1 Peter Summary - Swindoll

Modern Day Suffering - McKnight

Introduction: The Need for Hope

The Foundation of Hope
The resurrection of Christ is the basis of our living hope
which is eternally secure and will be fully and finally possessed in heaven.
(1 Peter 1:3-5)

So, praise God for His mercy!

The Benefits of Hope
Because we believe in Jesus and love Him—though we do not see Him—
we endure the testing of our faith in anticipation of a glorious salvation.
(1 Peter 1:6-9)

So, rejoice in the midst of your waiting!

The Culmination of Hope
The Old Testament writers eagerly anticipated
the gracious good news that was fulfilled
in Christ’s death, resurrection, and exaltation.
(1 Peter 1:10-12)

So, take advantage of the provision of living hope through faith in Jesus.

Praise be to the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope
through the resurrection of Christ from the dead.

Home Church
Our Home Churches meet weekly to facilitate quicker relational depth, study the same passage taught Sunday to help apply Scripture in the context of community, and pray with one another.  Home Church helps our body seek God’s best for one another.

Home Church Questions
These questions are adapted from Scott Duvall, “1 Peter: Living in God’s Grace”

•  Peter says we are “temporary residents” or foreigners in this world. Yet it seems like many Christians today forget this and spend all their time and energy seeking the world’s approval and acceptance. Where does this lead?

•  What helps you remember that our citizenship is not in this world but in God's kingdom? Why is this a big deal?

•  How is biblical hope different (and much better than) wishful thinking?

•  How is a “living hope” far superior to what we might call a “dead hope”? What would be the difference between the two?

•  What would it be like if you had nothing to look forward to in life? How hopeless do you think our world really is? Explain your answer.

•  How can focusing on our future help us move through daily trials? In other words, how can hope help us now? Do we really let that happen?

•  We often hear the saying, “where there is life, there is hope”, but we can also say, “where there is hope, there is life.” To what extent are you allowing hope to shape your life now? How can you let Hope play its full role in encouraging and strengthening you?
