Deacons are God’s gift to the church, raised up to embody the heart of Christ through humble and Spirit-filled service. The New Testament shows that as churches grew and matured, God provided deacons to meet practical needs so that elders could stay devoted to prayer and the ministry of the Word (Acts 6:1–7; Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:8–13). Far from being a secondary role, deacons are essential for the health and mission of the church, ensuring that every part of the body is cared for and strengthened. The qualifications Scripture gives remind us that this is a sacred calling, requiring faithfulness, integrity, and a tested life. And while Christians may differ on some details of the office, what is clear is that deacons reflect Jesus Himself—the true Servant—who came not to be served but to serve. As our church recognizes deacons, we celebrate how God has designed His people to work together: elders leading through prayer and teaching, and deacons advancing the mission by joyfully serving the body so that the gospel may go forth with power.
