If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.
– 1 Corinthians 12:17-18
I love the diversity we experience at Fellowship. Some of that diversity is greater than others but we welcome it in every form. I suspect we are not as economically diverse as I would like and I know that we could reflect the racial diversity of our community a little more. We can pray about those things and make sure we are doing what we can to be welcoming to everybody we see. We should probably even go out of our way to be more welcoming to those who do not fit into our narrow socioeconomic profile. But I want to celebrate something that is a clear biblical pattern of diversity. The diversity of gifts in the Body of Christ is highlighted like nothing else is in Scripture..
When Paul was writing to the church at Corinth he was dealing with a lot of problems. One of them was that their diversity was leading to divisions ( see esp. 1 Cor. 11:17-22). Paul immediately follows his rebuke of their divisions with a celebration of God’s plan for diversity–a diversity of gifts. Within the church God has gifted every believer. Those gifts are different and every one is not only needed but necessary.
We are blessed at Fellowship to have people who are gifted in so many different ways. Some of them you see up front in prominent roles teaching and leading worship. However, I want you to know how many, many people are serving behind the scenes in ways that may not get noticed but are absolutely critical. Every Sunday morning as I walk around the church before the services people are making coffee, praying, getting snacks ready, unlocking doors, turning on lights, and shaking hands so that the services run smoothly. In at least three different settings every Sunday morning people are running computers, light boards and sound systems so that the people up from can teach and sing. During the week, chairs have been straightened, flowers planted, bulletins printed and crafts prepared so that Sunday is an experience of worship and not chaos.
Praise God for the diversity of gifted at Fellowship Bible church! Are you serving with your gifts to complete the diversity of the Body of Christ at Fellowship? You should be.
