Temptation and Prayer
Jesus’ Patterns for Prayer
The Example of Jesus: (22:39-44) Jesus Himself demonstrates the need to be vigilant in prayer.
• Sustaining prayer is habitual (22:39). Assumption: You have been praying already.
• Sustaining prayer recognizes the reality of temptation (22:40). Assumption: You are aware of your own weaknesses.
• Sustaining prayer is private and reverent (22:41). Assumption: You are intimate with God.
• Sustaining prayer submits to the will of God (22:42). Assumption: You know your role and God’s role.
• Sustaining prayer is supernatural (22:43). Assumption: You have a spiritual view of the world.
• Sustaining prayer is agonizing (22:44). Assumption: You are involved in important things.
The Example of the Disciples: (22:45-46) The disciples themselves demonstrate the need to be vigilant in prayer.
• Sustaining prayer is never in complete isolation (22:45). Assumption: Some people know you well.
• Sustaining prayer is a constant need (22:46). Assumption: You are living for a purpose.
Prayer sustains us
through the agonizing calling of life.
