The Impact of a Coat

December 24th, 2011 by Chris

When we put the tags on the angel tree to provide Christmas for our ministries at Sallie Cone Elementary and Life After Prison Ministries we could not have predicted the impact of a coat. Below is a story that was sent in by Shane Willbanks, one of the leaders of Life After Prison Ministries at Fellowship, sent about giving out the gifts from the angel tree that Fellowship gave.

Thanks for being generous and allowing things like coats to further the work of Jesus Christ in these ministries.

Just wanted to pass this along to you.  Monday night when we handed out the Angel Tree gifts to our proteges, one of them was especially moved.  This middle aged man, who stands about 6 foot 5, began to tear up when he opened his box and saw that he had received a coat.  “I can’t believe I got a coat.  How did you know I needed one?  I didn’t ask for one.”  I told him how I’d noticed he’d come to group week after week without one, even when it was cold.  I told him how I put his need before the church and they responded generously.  Through tears he told me how just a month ago he was homeless, and now he was sitting in a room surrounded by people who love him, in a church who doesn’t even know him but got him a coat.  He was overwhelmed.  And we were truly blessed to be a part of such generosity.  Please tell the church body how much we appreciate their support in this ministry.
Blessings,
Shane Willbanks

Simply Christmas

December 16th, 2011 by Shane

I love Christmas!  It’s the one time a year my wife can get me to go shopping and I will be a joy to shop with!  I remember a Christmas years ago when I was a junior in high school. I had heard and seen the need my parents had for a bedroom set & developed a plan. I saved money from my job & was going to meet this need for my parents. I hid everything from them, the savings, the purchase & the delivery.  Then on Christmas Eve when they went to bed, I began to assemble the dresser, the night stands, the headboard & foot board. With each passing hour, the excitement built up more and more to see their faces and see their joy when they got this grand gift.

The next morning we woke my parents up, hurried them to the tree, and began to rip open presents. Now this is the moment… my parents would finally see the gift I had given them, they would realize I had picked out the perfect, unexpected present for them & that it would meet a need they had.

However, my parents didn’t go near the gift. They took a minute or two, glanced at it & said a quick thanks, but they moved us to the kitchen and started preparing for breakfast saying we needed to hurry because we had more people to see & parties to attend. We were too busy to sit & enjoy anything, even a fantastic gift.

Can you imagine?….I was devastated!!

Or I would have been devastated, if this was actually the way my parents had responded. In fact, my parents loved the gift and they expressed their love and appreciation for the thought. The bedroom set is still in being used to this day!

If your first response to this story (before I told you it was only partly true) was anger, frustration or even disbelief that someone could have passed over such a thoughtful & meaningful gift from someone who loves them, I’m with ya!  However, the point I want to make is that this rushed, head nod to a great gift is what I believe we do every Christmas.  Let me explain.

We have a Father in Heaven who saw our desperate situation, our great need & did something about it! He came to us, as a baby to live a life of perfection we could not live, to die a death in our place that we deserved & to pay a debt on our behalf that has bankrupted us since the day we were born & to destroy the death that would have otherwise enslaved us for eternity. Yet on a day that is supposed to celebrate this GREAT & AWESOME gift, we do everything except focus on The Gift & The Giver.

Think of how frustrated, angry or sad you felt as I told you the partially true story of my parents and the bedroom suite. How much more should it frustrate us that this is what is typical for us, for me. The dismal response is OUR response to the God of the Universe pouring out His heart to us in The Ultimate Life-Changing Gift to ever have been offered! This is a tragedy! And if we do not purposely do something different, it will not change.

In the extraordinary life of Christ, we find a lot of simplicity.  When you think of it, Jesus was born in a simple setting (Luke 2:6-7), to simple parents, had a simple (yet awesome) sign of his arrival (Matthew 2:9-10). The people who came to see the baby had a simple reaction – worship (Matthew 2:11). Just before Jesus began His public ministry, John the Baptist had a simple message to people in preparation for the coming of Christ – Repent & be baptized (Matthew 3:1).  When you think about Jesus call to His disciples, it was simple – Follow ME (Matthew 4:19).  His message in the Great Commission after He rose from the dead was simply, ‘do what I did, make disciples (Matthew 28:19).’ Finally, on the night Jesus would be betrayed, His call, which is a call for us tonight (& everyday)…was simply “Remember ME” (Luke 22:19)

So what is the solution? How do we do this in a culture that promotes complexity, extravagance & selfishness?

Here are some ideas & steps to do in order to orient you Christmas break & your family Christmas around Jesus Christ.  Typically we suggest picking one, but I would offer that if you do all and are intentional with your family as you do each, you will increase the joy of Christmas, because the focus will be on an eternal gift instead of temporal items that will break and fade.

-Take time to spend thanking God for the Ultimate Gift that is found in Jesus Christ.

-Worship together as a family Christmas Eve & Christmas. Fellowship Bible Church has a Christmas Eve service at 6:30 PM, Christmas Morning at 10 AM

-Read the Christmas Story in Luke 2 to your family before you open your gifts.

-Join the Fusion Program & as a family purchase a water filter to provide clean water that will increase the life expectancy & lower the chance of infection & disease.  Click here to see a 40 second video to save a life

-You can also help the Fellowship Student Ministry’s effort to give 5000 meals to starving children, one quarter at a time (we have a jar in the youth room you can drop off change, cash or checks, our goal is $1250 by April!).  This is in partnership with Pitza 42

Overall, simplify Christmas to make it all about CHRIST…I mean, look back to the first Christmas & the life of Christ. When you think about it, Christmas was much simpler back then, but all was focused simply on Jesus and worshiping the King who had come as a baby to redeem His people!  We need to purposely & proactively simplify Christmas, regardless of holiday tradition in order to focus on God’s great gift, His Son, Our Redeemer, Our Hope – Jesus Christ. Then, we will shout from the mountaintops, we can fully sing Joy to the World, because we have received this awesome gift from God & desire to share this joy with our family & the families around the world.  This Christmas, simply Remember Christ, Worship Christ, Focus on Christ!

Operation Christmas Child 2011 Celebration

December 11th, 2011 by Chris

God is so good . . . He gives us all talents and gifts that make us work so well as a body.  I am so thankful that He has given Brian his videography talents.  And I appreciate Brian sharing those so creatively again.  Brian graciously and humbly works so many hours to do this for us.  And Brian repeatedly talks about what an honor it is to do this

It is SUCH an honor.  We are privileged each year to be a part of something so much bigger than ourselves.  God is with us in the small things and the big.  It’s my privilege to get to share some of those things with you.

God shows up each year in the little things.  Providing flip flops that someone felt convicted about including in their boxes – that is a provision of the Lord. The 200 boxes of toothpaste that were donated by dentists just when we needed them – and the 200 toothbrushes that showed up minutes later donated through an insurance company – were all His handiwork.  Finding on the first try the 1 box in a hundred that was missing the candy – that’s His doing.  Orchestrating just the right volunteers for each day’s delivery – only God could coordinate that.  The Father has walked before us each step of the way from each individual box that was packed to each carton delivered to LR.  He was in our collection week.  We set a goal this year of 1500 boxes for FBC and 5000 for our relay center.  God is good and in His goodness He gave FBC the opportunity to share His love 1590 times!  And our relay center produced 5611 gospel opportunities!  Several people have already received emails and we know that boxes from here have gone to Togo, Lebanon, Benin and Tanzania.

This year a few of us got the chance to follow all of those boxes one step farther by working in a processing center.  The Scharns had the opportunity to travel to Charlotte, NC and the Robinsons and the Alexanders traveled with Ken and me to Atlanta.  If you get the chance, grab one of them and ask about their experiences.  We definitely want to go back next year and after talking with them, I guarantee you will want to join us.  I do want to share one story with you about God’s presence in the rest of the delivery of these gifts.  While in Atlanta I was talking with a dock worker who was checking in some extra boxes we delivered.  He said he keeps hearing non-profits talking about how donations are down, but OCC continues to gather more and more boxes each year – meeting or exceeding expectations every collection.  He said, “God’s hand is truly on this ministry.”

By the time we got to Atlanta they had already processed over 1 million boxes.  Seeing that many boxes is amazing – but seeing God’s hand in it is overwhelming. Todd and I were checking the contents of boxes for inappropriate items.  On our first day there we processed boxes going to Madagascar. During that first day we saws lots of items and we were encouraged by how many boxes contained appropriate items.  On our second day we were checking boxes that were going to Ukraine.  We hadn’t been working very long and it occurred to me that I had seen several winter hats and gloves.  I didn’t remember seeing them the day before.  So, then we started paying attention.  Box after box after box contained hats and/or mittens.  The boxes we were checking had come from southern and NW AR, OK, MS, AL, and FL, so they weren’t just from one group.  We started holding them up when we saw them.  Our group was becoming emotional as we were seeing that God was providing just what was needed for the Ukranian kids that would be receiving the boxes.  At one point we noticed that we were starting to see fewer and fewer hats and gloves.  We called over one of the supervisors and asked if the delivery area had changed.  She went to ask for us and came back to let us know that we were now processing for the country of Belize.   Belize is just north of Guatemala on the Gulf of Mexico.  I can’t imagine there is a huge need for hats or mittens there.  During the remainder of our time I could have counted the hats we saw on one hand.  Not only had God orchestrated just what was needed each box, but He gave us the eyes to see it and the chance to be amazed by Him.

I often say that our job here, to pack boxes and run a relay center, is not rocket science.  But God walks with us here.  When we got to the processing center we got to see where the project becomes big enough that it almost takes rocket science to get the job accomplished – and He is there as well.  God knows the name and location of each child and the contents of each box.  He is in the details – big and small – and He allows us to be a part of that process.  What an honor and what a privilege to be used by Him to bring others to His throne!

So many of you helped with the collection this year.   I wish I could hug and thank each one of you personally.  We had packers, wrappers, coordinators, shoppers, cooks, drivers . . .  Thank you for offering your time, talents and resources.  Thank you for making an impact for the kingdom!!  One box = one child.  5611 boxes = 5611 children!  I am so blessed and honored to be a part of this amazing team.

Keep checking the website throughout the year.  We will be posting OCC updates with impact stories from the field as the boxes are delivered.  We will also be giving tips on better ways to pack your boxes and we will feature items to purchase for your boxes.  In addition, we will share more info about the processing centers and eventually post info for those interested in working at a processing center next year.

For His Glory!

Dawn
